Speaker: Maurice Cox, director of planning and development, city of Detroit
This talk looks at creative design and community engagement as strategies for long-term equitable development. Maurice Cox, Detroit’s planning director, has been closely involved in that city’s revitalization efforts. He visits Houston to share his experience with merging architecture, politics, and design education while engaging the community to rebuild neighborhoods and spark a recovery that lasts.

About the Speaker
Maurice Cox has been named one of “20 Masters of Design” by Fast Company magazine and one of the “Most Admired Design Educators in America” in the annual ranking by Design Intelligence. He has served as associate dean for community engagement at Tulane University’s School of Architecture and director of the Tulane City Center, a university-affiliated practice operating at the intersection of design, urban research, and civic engagement throughout New Orleans.
About the Kinder Institute Forum Lecture Series
The Kinder Institute Forum Lectures are organized by Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research. Established in 2010, the institute advances the understanding of critical issues facing Houston and other leading U.S. urban centers through scientific research, educational programs, and public outreach with the goal of developing more humane and sustainable cities.
