06:00 PM – 06:45 PM

What kind of music might artists have listened to while they were creating the magnificent works on view in Bestowing Beauty: Masterpieces from Persian Lands? Drop in to a gallery concert with Aaron Hermes as he brings the exhibition to life with sitar music.
Featuring more than 100 works of art from the 6th to the 19th century from the Hossein Afshar Collection—one of the most significant collections of Persian art in private hands—Bestowing Beauty features objects, rarely displayed publicly, that highlight the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Iranian civilization.
About the Performer
Aaron Hermes is a Houston-based musician, producer, and artist celebrating more than 20 years of sitar study. He began his journey with the sitar in 1997, and in 2003 he traveled to India to study with master sitarist Atmaram Sharma. While there, Hermes was also initiated on the santur—another string instrument used to play traditional Hindustani classical music—by Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, a leading advocate of santur. In the United States, Hermes has studied with acclaimed musicians including Indrajit Banerjee, Zakir Hussain, Abbos Kosimov, Steve Smith, and Glen Velez. He is the founder of Audio Telepathy, a musical collective and record label.
