Happy Lucky Golden Tofu Panda Dragon Good Time Fun Fun Show explores ways in which we see "Asian-ness" in the West through media, commodities, and familiar images—math nerds, nail salons, take-out restaurants, Hello Kitty, and Pokemon. The movie captures the downtown New York spirit with live portions filmed in an East Village Club and musical numbers and sketches shot on location throughout the city.

After the screening, join in for a live performance and Q&A session with Slanty Eyed Mama (Kate Rigg and Lyris Hung) and Director Carrie Preston!

This film includes strong language. Recommended for ages 16 and up.

About the Film

Schedule

7- 8:30 pm | Film and Live Performance
8:30 - 9 pm | Q&A

Slanty Eyed Mama consists of Juilliard trained electric violin virtuoso Lyris Hung and the comedic, political, lyrical actor-comedian (and fellow Juilliard graduate) Kate Rigg. Together they’ve created an original “Nuyorasian” voice, blending classical training, a variety of musical styles, and an edgy street perspective on pop culture, politics, race, and representation.

Slanty Eyed Mama gained a national following headlining the 2004 Asian Pacific Islander Fest in NYC, the 2005 PBS special Race is the Place, and National Conferences of Asian American Students at colleges across the country (ECAASU, NAASC). They are favorites at new music conferences (Toronto, Vancouver, Chicago), alternative music fests and benefits (Pridefest, LA Grand Performances), women's music festivals (Michigan, Girlfest Hawaii), and alt-culture venues (Chicago Museum of Modern Art and The Perth International Art Festival). Their sound is a street infused mix of hip hop, electroclash, spoken word, and pop rock, influenced by artists like Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, and The Roots.

Spearheading a movement to bring a new brand of pop culture to the main stream, Slanty Eyed Mama combines a hip urban sound with lyrics and rhymes that reflect America from Generasian-Next.
