The coronavirus pandemic has had widespread impacts across society, and one of those impacts can be on mental health as people deal with uncertainty about the future, anxiety over the disease, and constant news about the pandemic. It can be especially difficult for those with pre-existing anxiety and mental illnesses. However, just as COVID-19 can impact anyone, mental stress has no barriers and impacts all people. Previous studies on quarantine indicate that people are likely to experience an uptick in anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, especially as connectivity to support systems has been shown to be important in dealing with illnesses or crises. As working from home and social distancing become the norm, mental health professionals note that feelings of isolation and loneliness may grow. The anxiety and fear response around coronavirus can also trigger obsessive compulsive behaviors, traumatic stress, and feelings of helplessness. While some may be better equipped to manage stress, we all process stressors differently and can benefit from tips on how to protect our mental health.

Join Asia Society Texas Center for a conversation on the science behind what many may be experiencing and some suggestions for coping.
