When we go outdoors and into nature, our bodies and minds shift. Join Austin-based visiting artist, Elizabeth Chiles, in this exclusive online class at HCP to start creating photography inspired by the natural world and to explore the range of sensory and perceptual shifts we experience while in nature.

In this course, students will look at historical and contemporary examples of artists working in natural settings as well as be given writings and philosophical readings about the environment for group discussion and inspiration. Students will develop projects motivated by spending time outdoors. Work can be made on any photographic device and may range from abstract to straight photography.

Elizabeth Chiles’ work has been exhibited nationally, including recent showings at the Austin Museum of Art, Chelsea Art Museum, the Harry Ransom Center, Houston Center for Photography, and the Phoenix Art Museum. She has received grants from the City of Austin (2015-2019), Warhol Foundation (2012), and was a fellow at Hambidge, Creative Residency Program (2014.) In addition to her art practice, Chiles has taught theory and photography at UT Austin, Texas State, and Southwestern University for six years, teaching more than 30 courses.
