Guests are invited to HCP for an artist lecture with Constance Hockaday, one of the photographers of our exhibition, In the Wake.

Constance Hockaday works to restore people’s connection to the ocean, waterways, and urban waterfront. In both her floating public artwork and her gallery installations she creates meditative experiences that bring attention to the interconnectedness of human health and the health of the ocean. She believes that the conservation of our planet and our collective social health is a cultural endeavor-- a psycho-spiritual practice in taking risks and extending ourselves into uncharted social territories. A similar gusto is required for relating to the natural world and the legal system; the future of democracy and our planet depends on our active participation.

Hockaday’s projects ask participants to engage with the place where the social and physical worlds intersect. It asks questions about how we as a society organize space. Through direct confrontation and engagement with both unruly waters and the governing bodies that have been appointed to manage them, Hockaday works to create spaces of reflection. The practice is in reflecting on our social agreements about space and asking why? Who is allowed where? And how are we all responsible?
