Dornith Doherty: Seedling Cabinet I, II, III

Friday, Apr. 3, 2020 – Monday, Aug. 31, 2020

Dornith Doherty Seedling Cabinet I, II, III_1500px WEBSITE

Dornith Doherty began Archiving Eden in 2008 as a way to explore the role of seed banks and their preservation efforts in the face of climate change and the extinction of natural species. The global effort to preserve future plant species through seed vaults is simultaneously optimistic and pessimistic: individuals and governments from around the world collaborate to create botanical back-up systems, but climate change and political instability have created the need for “Doomsday Vaults” in preparation for worst-case environmental scenarios. Presented by Rice Public Art, the three lenticular photographs, Seedling Cabinet I, II, III (2019), consist of collaged x-ray images of research seedlings Doherty captured at the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation (USA) and the Millennium Seed Bank (England).
