Join us to celebrate Islamic culture and Houston's Muslim community at Asia Society Texas Center's first-ever Family Day highlighting Eid al-Fitr!
A Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr is a day of merriment and thanksgiving. Throughout Eid, people visit friends and family, give gifts, and eat sweets and delicious food.
Learn about the holiday of Eid al-Fitr and how it is celebrated in the U.S., and enjoy a showcase of Islamic traditions, arts and crafts, music, and more!
This event is FREE and open to the public. Food and drink will be available for sale.
Activities
Grand Hall Bazaar | 12–4 p.m.
Explore the all-day market, featuring traditional food, fashion, toys, and games.
Islamic Calligraphy | 12–4 p.m.
Watch demonstrations, learn about traditional writing styles, and write your name in Arabic.
Ebru Water Marbling Exhibition | 12–4 p.m.
Ebru is the traditional Turkish art of creating colorful patterns by painting on a surface of water. Watch artists as they create Ebru paintings and teach about this beautiful artistic tradition.
The Story of Eid al-Fitr | 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
"Eid al-Fitr" translates to "Festival of Breaking the Fast." Join us upstairs to learn the history of Eid al-Fitr, see traditional stories come to life with props and costumes, and enjoy an Eid cookie!
Traditional Turkish Folk Dancing | 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m.
Join us upstairs to learn new dances with a Turkish folk dance group of volunteers dedicated to preserving, staging, and teaching traditional dances from across Turkey.
Eid Greeting Cards | 12–4 p.m.
Have fun creating an Eid greeting card! Learn about the different imagery, phrases, and symbols associated with Eid. Design your own card and send your greetings to friends and family.
Henna | 12–4 p.m.
During Eid, many people decorate their hands with henna. Watch an artist demonstrate traditional designs, and receive your own design.
Eid Bookmarks | 12–4 p.m.
Create a beautiful bookmark using Eid motifs and Arabic calligraphy. Make one for a friend, or use it for your summer reading!
Photo Booth | 12–4 p..m
Try on traditional clothing from many of the cultures that celebrate Eid. Explore different textures, colors, and patterns, and take a photo to remember your day.
Performance and food vendor information will be added.
About the Muslim Series
Through a multidisciplinary approach that utilizes Asia Society’s breadth of programming opportunities, this series explores the artistic talents and stories of American Muslims to inspire our community to better understand one another.
