Inside every seed is the potential for the next generation of food, fiber, flowers and the thousands of products derived from plants. Many species of birds and mammals evolved with a specific seed, or plant grown from seed and threats to the future of those seeds place species in danger.
Seed activists believe that seed diversity is one of mankind's most valuable assets, yet the US lost 93% of its seed diversity between 1903 and 1983. Changes in agriculture and the urbanization of our culture affect seed production and availability. The solution to this pending crisis may lie in the hands of every farmer, gardener and homeowner across America. Angela Chandler of Urban Harvest will discuss the precious seed assets, their future, and ways that you can help plant the seeds of a brighter and more secure future.
Educator and Texas Master Gardener Angela Chandler is an instructor for Urban Harvest and recognized for sharing her extensive knowledge in educational programs, seminars, published articles. Her website The Garden Academy (www.thegardenacademy.com) focuses on gardening the Upper Gulf Coast to the Third Coast of the United States.
