In Soledad’s Shawl, director Roberto Gavaldón—master of melodrama—weaves a tale of power struggle, love, and jealousy. An idealistic city doctor (Arturo de Córdova) lends his services to help the community of a small Mexican village. When he falls in love with an Indian girl (Estela Inda) who has been spoken for by a campesino (Pedro Armendáriz), the doctor becomes involved in a feudalistic war among farmers and landowners.

Gavaldón explores fate and destiny with great emotional power. The dramatically intense scenes come to life in performances by the greatest stars of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema and in extraordinary images shot by Gabriel Figueroa against the backdrop of rural Mexico.
