OVERVIEW

This summer, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is going digital! Join HCCC for week-long virtual craft camps for kids between the ages of 5 and 12.  Virtual Craft Camp is designed to encourage creativity, experimentation, and self-expression, while introducing kids to a variety of craft materials and processes. Camp options include an in-depth exploration of fiber art or clay, or a tour of various craft processes in our mixed-media camp.

HOW DOES VIRTUAL CRAFT CAMP WORK?

  • Campers will receive a kit with the materials for the week and can participate whenever is best for your family during the day.
  • Each day, pre-recorded videos will lead campers through looking and critically thinking about craft and hands-on projects. Explore the plants in HCCC’s Craft Garden, and visit our resident artists’ studios from the comfort of your home.
  • Experienced teaching artists will guide campers through our art-making activities and will be available to answer any technical questions.
  • The week culminates with a Zoom Show and Tell, where each camper will be able to show off their favorite camp project and chat with other campers!
  • Each kit will include all the materials and printed instructions for each project.
  • Delivery of kits within a 10-mile radius of HCCC is included in the cost of camp.
  • Kits can be mailed for an additional cost of $15.

VIRTUAL CRAFT CAMP OPTIONS

**Mixed-Media Craft Camp**

Daily Time Block: 2 hours per day
HCCC Member Fee: $130 (per child, per session)
Non-Member Fee: $145 (per child, per session)

The Mixed-Media Craft Camp is designed to introduce young artists to craft processes and techniques especially created for their specific learning development. Explore fiber arts by learning about the life of cotton through videos filmed in our Craft Garden and making a pom-pom garland. Learn about kinetic sculpture, experiment, and make your own designs come to life!  Kits include all the materials for these and other projects, such as paper-mache vases, polymer-clay jewelry, and nature-themed face masks.

**Fiber Craft Camp**
Recommended Age: 8 -12 years
Daily Time Block: 3 hours per day
HCCC Member Fee: $160 (per child, per session)
Non-Member Fee: $175 (per child, per session)

Dive into the world of fiber arts in this camp aimed for 8 -12 year olds. Campers will virtually visit our Craft Garden to learn which plants can make natural dyes and learn about weaving on a loom from an HCCC resident artist. Throughout the week, they will dye their own wool roving and fabric and learn the basics of weaving and embroidery. Campers can practice their design skills by printing on fabric and sewing a plush monster doll. The kits provide all materials needed for the projects, including an embroidery hoop and cardboard loom that your child can continue to use after camp!

**Clay Craft Camp**
Recommended Age: 5 -12 years
Daily Time Block: 3 hours per day
HCCC Member Fee: $160 (per child, per session)
Non-Member Fee: $175 (per child, per session)

In this all-ages camp, experiment with a range of clay techniques and processes. Discover clay 101 by virtually visiting the HCCC resident artists working in clay; then make your own air-dry clay snake-coil pots and self-portraits. Explore ways to make small details and fun patterns in polymer clay while sculpting miniature food and BFF necklaces. Uncover the science behind glazing with HCCC teacher artists, and practice pattern-making on a clay tile. Wrap up your week by learning how to make your own naturally dyed playdough at home! The kits provide all materials needed for projects, including a set of clay tools that your child can use over and over!
