MEXICAN MODERNISM: THE GOLDEN AGE OF MEXICAN CINEMA
Free with Museum admission!
Friday, Aug 4: 2 p.m.
Thursday, Sep 14: 2 p.m.
Pedro Armendáriz stars as the title character who is a powerful cacique who rules his town with iron-fisted authority. He is suspected of slaying his enemy, but nobody in the community dares to denounce him. When a government agent (Arturo Martínez) arrives to investigate the murder and is courageous enough to question the cacique’s authority, one murder calls for another and a chain of violent vengeance ensues.
Director Roberto Gavaldón explores the power relations between the potentate and the town’s inhabitants with intense dramatic depth. Rosauro Castro is one of this master genre director’s most compelling melodramas. The film is also a rarity: Its negative was lost in a fire that destroyed the Mexican film archive in the 1980s.
► Parking update: A new underground parking garage, located at 5101 Montrose, is now open. Learn more about changes to visitor parking and plan ahead for your visit.
