The Most Millionaires
During a brief period in the 1930’s, Conroe was known as the American town with “the most millionaires per capita”, when oil was discovered in a field south of the city. Today, the area is built up around a support industry for oil and gas drilling. With everyone I’ve spoken to, the boom and busts are always just in the back of their minds. In the next breath, they usually tell me about how we once had the most millionaires.
