Another Dawn takes a dizzying journey into Mexico City’s nightlife. In a twist on the Mexican melodrama genre, director Julio Bracho adopts elements of the American film-noir style. The femme fatale warns the protagonist: “We must not let this night take us into its vertigo.” Yet, as often happens with film-noir heroes, the idealistic Octavio (Pedro Armendáriz) is sucked into a vortex of trouble. He flees a corrupt governor and finds refuge in a cinema. Once there, he is reunited with his former lover (Andrea Palma), who must choose passion over duty if she elects to save him. The film explores themes of political corruption and bygone relationships. Cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa’s Chiaroscuro-style photography movingly captures the big city’s menacing atmosphere.
