The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, partners with Gulf Coast Reads to present a reading by Ann Weisgarber, author of The Promise, followed by a conversation with Weisgarber and Lisa Gray, columnist and features writer at the Houston Chronicle.

Gulf Coast Reads is an annual initiative that focuses on promoting the simultaneous reading and discussing of a selected book by residents of the upper Texas Gulf Coast.

About the Lecture

About the book
The Promise, this year’s Gulf Coast Reads selection, is a novel about Texas history, complicated relationships during the Victorian era, and the Galveston storm of 1900. The book was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction, and was a finalist for both the Spur Award for Best Western Historical Fiction and the Ohioana Book Award for Fiction. For more on The Promise, RSVP to one of October's book tours.

About the author
Ann Weisgarber debuted with the award-winning novel The Personal History of Rachel DuPree, inspired by a photograph of an unknown woman sitting in front of a sod dugout. Weisgarber continues her focus on historical fiction with The Promise, set on Galveston Island in the weeks leading up to the great storm of 1900. She is working on her next novel that takes place during the winter of 1887 in what is now Capitol Reef National Park, Utah.
