In recent years, the U.S.–China relationship has begun to head in a more adversarial direction, entering a new period of strategic competition. Notably, the trade war roiled global markets for two years before reaching a point of relief as the "phase one" agreement was signed in January 2020. But even as tensions calm on the trade front, other economic, political, and security concerns keep the U.S.–China relationship fraught. These include issues relating to technological competition and intellectual property, such as Huawei and cyber espionage, as well as political and foreign policy disagreements and regional military tensions in the wider Indo-Pacific. The U.S.–China relationship is expected to become increasingly confrontational, as China grows more confident of its future in the region and in the world and moves to occupy a growing number of political vacuums left by an increasingly nationalist and isolationist America.

Amid this conflict of national interests, former Prime Minister of Australia and Asia Society Policy Institute President the Honorable Kevin Rudd proposes an approach of "managed strategic competition" to address geopolitical and geo-economic stability across the world. About the Speaker

The Honorable Kevin Rudd joined the Asia Society Policy Institute as its inaugural President in January 2015. He served as Australia’s 26th Prime Minister (2007-2010, 2013) and as Foreign Minister (2010-2012). He led Australia’s response during the global financial crisis — the only major developed economy not to go into recession — and helped found the G20. As Chair of the Independent Commission on Multilateralism, Mr. Rudd is also leading a 2015-2016 review of the UN system. During 2014-2015, Mr. Rudd led a major research project on U.S.-China relations at the Harvard Kennedy School, where he is a Senior Fellow. Mr. Rudd is a Distinguished Fellow at Chatham House in London, a Distinguished Statesman with the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, and a Distinguished Fellow at the Paulson Institute in Chicago. Mr. Rudd is a member of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization's Group of Eminent Persons. He is proficient in Mandarin Chinese, serves as a Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing, and co-Chairs the China Global Affairs Council of the World Economic Forum.
