The Assassin

Friday, Nov. 27, 2015

07:00 PM – 08:45 PM
US/Central

Master filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien won Best Director at Cannes for this lavishly-told tale, which occurs in the 9th century when China is militarily being torn apart. Yinniang (Shu Qi) lives in the countryside with a nun who abducted her as a child. She is trained as an unrivaled practitioner of the martial arts and is sent back to her home town of Weibo on a mission of vengeance. The British Film Institute’s Sight & Sound says The Assassin “takes control of the wuxia period with a Tang dynasty martial-arts fable of mysterious and revelatory command.”
