Set in the 1580s, Fire Over England follows a naval officer (Laurence Olivier) who volunteers to spy at the Spanish court to learn the plans for the invasion of his native England and to identify traitors among the English nobility. He arouses the romantic interest of Queen Elizabeth (Flora Robson), one of her ladies-in-waiting (Vivien Leigh), and a Spanish noblewoman who helps with his missions. Later, he leads the fleet against the huge Spanish Armada. Produced by Alexander Korda, the film features cinematography by James Wong Howe.
