Joshua Rios, Please Don't Bury me Alive, still from 2016 solo exhibition and performance made in collaboration with Anthony Romero. Curated by Caroline Picard and Devon King for Sector 2337, Chicago, IL. Courtesy of the artist.

Collective Presence is a curatorial project organized by DiverseWorks, in partnership with a cohort of Houston-based creatives, that features a series of micro-residencies, workshops, and community discussions that address current social and political issues impacting the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.

Invited artists will join DiverseWorks from February – April 2019, to create new work on site and in conversation with each other to address the current politics of land, climate crisis, and environmental erasure. Joshua Rios (Chicago), Rabéa Ballin (Houston), and Rafa Esparza (Los Angeles) will each be on-site during  10-day micro-residencies.

Collective Presence programs will be presented in conjunction with the Latino Art Now! 2019 National Conference on Latino Art, a program of the Inter-University Program for Latino Research and hosted by the University of Houston’s Center for Mexican American Studies and the Smithsonian Latino Center (April 4 – 6, 2019).

DiverseWorks and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts will also co-present a performance as part of CounterCurrent19 (April 9-14, 2019).

Public hours and events will vary. Check back often for updates.
