US/Central

20191206_Kabuki Art Workshop

In celebration of our Tsuruya Kōkei: Kabuki Prints Revised & Revisited exhibition, join us to transform into a Kabuki actor for the night! Makeup is one of the most important parts of the Kabuki theater tradition, as it not only sets characters apart but also helps the actors to embody their characters. For this reason, actors apply their own makeup to allow themselves to delve deeper into their roles.

Learn the history behind the development of Kabuki makeup and the meaning behind the different designs. Take a tour of our Tsuruya Kōkei exhibition and gain a new perspective on the culture of Kabuki theater. Explore how Kabuki actors use color and facial lines to express emotion and the iconic looks of Kabuki heroes and villains. Become a Kabuki actor yourself as you paint your own face with Kabuki-inspired makeup designs. Once your makeup is complete, learn to make Kabuki-themed origami, all while enjoying complimentary tea, wine, and light snacks.

Makeup materials and brushes will be provided. Participants will keep materials at the end of the workshop. Registration fee includes instructor, materials, and administrative fees. No previous theater experience required. Bring your own cloth if you wish to make a face impression of the Kabuki makeup.

Limited spots available. Tickets will not be available on the day of the program.

Class minimum: 7 participants
Minimum age: 18 years
