About YLI Online

Will this summer's YLI sessions be moved to in-person if Houston's stay-at-home order is lifted?
No. Asia Society is committed to holding all three sessions of the Young Leaders Institute online this summer, which will help ensure that students from Houston and elsewhere can continue to participate once accepted, regardless of the status of their local stay-at-home restrictions.

What will students need to participate online?
Students will need to have reliable access to the Internet and a webcam to receive the full benefits of the Young Leaders Institute. Additionally, students will need to commit to the session, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Central daily, each week.

If I have already applied to YLI, how do I apply to the new COVID-19 session?
Please review the new COVID-19: Realities and New Reflections session. If you are interested but have already submitted your application, email [email protected] with the subject line "COVID-19 Session" and express your interest in participating. You will receive an email to confirm whether or not you have been admitted into the additional session, and payment information.

Application Requirements and Process

Who can apply to the Young Leaders Institute?
High school students from anywhere in the U.S. are encouraged to apply for the Young Leaders Institute as long as they can meet the time commitments required. While there are no age limitations, students must be high school students in Fall 2020 or have just graduated high school in Spring 2020.

How do I apply?
Interested students must submit an online application, which includes two short essays. We do not require letters of recommendation, additional writing samples, or admission interviews for application to the Institute.

Is there a GPA requirement?
There is no GPA requirement. Applications will be evaluated holistically, with emphasis on strong essay answers.

Do I need to have completed specific coursework?
No specific coursework or prior interest in foreign policy, international relations, or international business is necessary. The Young Leaders Institute welcomes students from all backgrounds and interests.

When is the deadline for application?
Applications will be accepted until midnight on Monday, May 25, 2020. Spots are limited, so students are encouraged to apply early to increase their chances of admission.

Can I apply to more than one session?
Yes. Students may apply to one, two, or all three sessions of the Young Leaders Institute simply by checking the sessions they are interested in on the application form.

Can I submit my application after the posted deadline?
No. Applications will be closed after the May 25 deadline, and no further applications will be accepted.

How do I check the status of my application? When will I hear if I have been accepted?
Following the submission of the online application form, students will be contacted individually only if additional information is required. Acceptances will be sent out on a rolling basis. If you have specific questions regarding your application, you may email [email protected].

Cost and Scholarship Information

What does the Young Leaders Institute cost?
It is free to apply; however, a nonrefundable $50 participation fee per session will be due upon acceptance into the Institute. Scholarships are available for students with demonstrated need.

What forms of payment are accepted?
Payment can be made via credit card online or over the phone with our Guest Services team. Additional details will be sent out with the acceptance email.

Are there scholarships available?
Need-based scholarships are available. Students who indicate interest in a scholarship on their application form will receive additional instructions with their acceptance email on how to provide the required information to demonstrate need
