The 20th annual Virginia and Ira Jackson Lecture is presented by Suzanne Boorsch, the Robert L. Solley Curator of Prints and Drawings, Yale University Art Gallery

Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011), whose career spanned six decades, has long been recognized as one of the great American artists of the 20th century. With prodigious inventiveness and singular beauty, she brought together a conception of the canvas as both a formalized field and a platform for gestural drawing. Frankenthaler was eminent among the second generation of postwar Abstract painters in America, and she is widely credited for playing a pivotal role in the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Color Field painting. One of the foremost colorists of her time, she produced a body of work with a profound impact on contemporary art.

Although Frankenthaler’s contributions as a painter are generally the focus when her work is discussed, her achievements as a printmaker are equal—if not greater—in importance. Suzanne Boorsch, a leading authority on Frankenthaler’s work, explores how the artist continued to make inroads in this medium and garner critical attention, even after contemporary taste had relegated Frankenthaler’s painting to the margins.

A reception to meet the speaker follows.
