Holocaust Museum Houston, together with Rice University’s Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance and DACAMERA, presents The Music of Mieczyslaw Weinberg, a free performance by pianist and DACAMERA Artistic Director Sarah Rothenberg with DACAMERA Young Artists. The performance will be preceded by a panel discussion, Mieczyslaw Weinberg:  Music as Memory,  featuring Rothenberg in discussion with Houston Grand Opera music director Patrick Summers and Boston Globe critic Jeremy Eichler, author of the forthcoming book, “Time’s Echo: War, Modern Music, and the Soundscapes of Memory.” This panel of musical experts will explore the fascinating life story of Polish-Russian Jewish composer Mieczeslaw Weinberg (1919-1996), encompassing many of the struggles and tragedies of the twentieth century, and whose recently rediscovered compositions are finally receiving international recognition. Weinberg’s “Piano Quintet,” composed in 1944, is a dramatic and powerful testament to the historical moment in which it was composed.

The performance and panel discussion are part of the Boniuk Institute’s ongoing efforts to promote religious tolerance and literacy.

This project is co-presented by Rice University’s Boniuk Institue for Religious Tolerance, DACAMERA and Holocaust Museum Houston. Major support is provided by The Boniuk Institute and the Association for Jewish Studies Arts and Culture Community Grant.
