Director Nicholas Hytner brings his own London stage production of Alan Bennett’s play to the screen. The Madness of King George follows the growing insanity of England’s George III (Nigel Hawthorne) in the 1780s, and the intricate power play set in motion by the royal court to contain the possible damage. Rupert Everett, Ian Holm, and Helen Mirren costar in the Oscar-winning film.
“Bennett and Hytner bring this strange interlude to engrossing life, but it is Hawthorne who finds the king’s grieving heart.” —Rolling Stone
“This comic-tragic drama of the tormented king who almost lost his mind confirms that power games, family scandals, and personal intrigues have always been integral to the British Crown, an institution both revered and reviled.” —Variety
