The Good Girls
Thursday, May. 2, 2019 – Thursday, May. 2, 2019
09:30 PM – 11:05 PM
Sofía (Ilse Salas) lives a life of luxury in the Las Lomas neighborhood in Mexico City. She spends her days playing tennis, lunching, and gossiping with other wives who make up her social set. When the 1982 financial crisis hits, the prospect of losing her wealth threatens to destroy Sofía’s marriage, friendships, and way of life. Depicting the sumptuous and superficial world of her characters, Alejandra Márquez Abella reflects on what happens when those who have wealth suddenly lose that privilege.
“With this subtle drama about high-society social maneuvering, writer-director Alejandra Márquez Abella essentially transplants Edith Wharton's thematic concerns to Mexico City in 1982.” - Chicago Reader
“Swirling camera work and chronological jumps quietly tighten the screw while the art direction provides continual delight: The Good Girls is, among things, a deliciously precise critique of 1980s fashion.” - Globe and Mail
“A true jewel.” - Chilango.com
“A neat and perfumed time bomb.” - Cine Premiere
“Patiently bathing in the excess of high society, director Alejandra Márquez Abella's camera often makes the audience feel like the silent fifth member of Sofía's inner circle.” - Cinema Axis
