Presented by Phyllis Danielson, first degree master of the Ohara School of Ikebana

The art of ikebana flower arranging has been practiced throughout Japan for more than 600 years. First developed from the Buddhist ritual of offering flowers to the spirits of the dead, ikebana soon became an independent art form practiced by all levels of society. Today, there are many schools and styles of ikebana, though each retains symbolic and philosophical overtones from ikebana´s religious origins.

The Ohara School was founded in the 19th century after trade opened between Japan and the West. In celebration of the Arts of Japan gallery at the MFAH, Phyllis Danielson demonstrates how the Ohara style expresses the glory of the spring season.

Light refreshments follow the demonstration.
