• UPDATE (Monday, January 27, 2020) — This event has been rescheduled from its original date of Wednesday, January 29, to Tuesday, April 28.

Learn about and taste teas from around the globe, including white, green, matcha, oolong, black, and dark varieties. Discover how they are similar and different from each other, and learn how to best brew each style for optimum flavor.

Kim McHugh, the owner of McHugh Tea Room and the only certified Tea Blending Master in Texas, will provide an interactive presentation on the history of tea, its multicultural journeys, and tea tasting traditions. Learn about the health benefits of tea and how tea can be used to nourish the body.

Nina Shimaguchi, Asia Society Texas Center's Japanese Outreach Initiative coordinator, will demonstrate a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, after which participants will try their hand at making matcha tea.

Registration includes tastings, sweets, tea-infused snacks, and a gift tea set for each guest.

About Kim McHugh and McHugh Tea Room

McHughTEA is the first tea room in the history of Bellaire, Texas, specializing in organic teas from around the world. This family-owned business began in 2010 with an online tea store, TrueLeafTea.com created by Certified Tea Specialist and Tea Blending Master, Kim McHugh. After many trips to England, the dream of creating an upscale, organic tea room that specialized in serving the highest quality organic teas supplemented by a variety of freshly made foods became a shared dream by the entire family.

The goal for the family was to provide a peaceful place where people could meet, explore the world of exotic teas and sample freshly prepared salads, pastries and desserts that would exceed their expectations.

About Nina Shimaguchi

Nina Shimaguchi was born in Osaka, Japan. When she was seven, she had her first opportunity to speak with English-speaking people. Though she could only introduce herself, she was surprised and happy to communicate in another language. Nina became interested in English and pursued international studies. While a student at Ritsumeikan University, she joined a program for international students to study Japanese and experience Japanese culture. As a result of this enjoyable volunteer experience, she went on to work in customer service for a hotel in Kyoto after graduation, helping to introduce Japanese culture to visitors from around the world. However, eventually she felt she wanted to share Japanese culture on a greater and deeper scale. Now, her aim is to create as many fans of Japan in Texas as possible and help people enjoy experiencing Japanese culture. Nina ultimately hopes that through her programs, more people will want to visit Japan.
