Tapir Spotlight on Species

Saturday, Apr. 28, 2018 – Sunday, Apr. 29, 2018

10:00 AM – 03:00 PM
US/Central

At the tapir habitat, located past okapi and bears and near the #10 on your Zoo map.

Tapirs are a rare mammal from the forests and mountains of Central and South America and southeast Asia. They are often confused with hippos, pigs or anteaters, but their closest living relatives are actually rhinos and horses. Tapirs are known for their unique long, wiggly nose, which they can use to grab leaves when foraging or as a snorkle when swimming!

Come find out all about tapirs and see our resident Baird's tapirs. Hear from the keepers who care for them each day, and see them get some special enrichment. We will also have a special visit from Dr. Pati Medici, world-renowned tapir researcher!

You'll also be able to participate in activities and purchase tapir-related souvenirs; proceeds will be donated to the Tapir Specialist Group who save tapirs in the wild. This event is free with your paid Zoo admission and is free for Zoo members.
