TANABATA “STAR” FESTIVAL

The Children’s Museum of Houston and the Consulate General of Japan at Houston invite guests to celebrate the Make a Wish! “Tanabata 七夕” Japanese Star Festival.

As legend is told in the Japanese culture, Vega and Altair are separated by the Milky Way. They are allowed to meet only once a year on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month. This reunion marks the celebration of the Tanabata (meaning the evening of the 7th). There will be traditional Japanese dances, movies and story telling.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

Kamishibai: Experience Tanabata 七夕 with traditional storytelling and learn to write in kanji. Event Times: 11 am, 12:30, and 1:30 pm in the Alcove.
Bon Odori: Embrace Japanese culture through this traditional Japanese dance. Event Time: 2:30 pm in the Alcove

About the Programs & Activities

ON-GOING ACTIVITIES:

Origami: Master the art of Japanese paper folding in Kid’s Hall.
Tanzaku: Make a wish, write it down on a Tanzaku, then hang it on a bamboo tree in Kid’s Hall.
Mini Kamishibai: Take home your own traditional storybook made by you in Kid’s Hall.

Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Thursday, 10:00 am - 8:00 pm
Sunday, 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Closed Mondays. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Easter Sunday.
General Admission: $17 per person and $16 for seniors 65 years and older. FREE for children under one and Museum Members. Free Hours: FREE FAMILY NIGHT: Thursdays 5 pm - 8 pm.
