Join University of Houston School of Art Professor, Raphael Rubinstein in a discussion around the exhibition Cheryl Donegan: GRLZ + VEILS. Donegan’s work embraces everyday materials and welcomes errors and glitches, her approach to painting is deeply connected to international avant-garde practices and theories that began in the 1960s. This talk will situate Donegan’s work in relation to artists such as German artist Sigmar Polke and the French Supports/Surface group, as well as to corresponding philosophical discourse. About Raphael Rubinstein
Raphael Rubinstein is the author of a book of micro-narratives about contemporary art, The Miraculous (Paper Monument, 2014), and an experimental long poem about 20th century Cairo, A Geniza (Granary Books, 2015). Recent collaborations with Heather Bause Rubinstein include a public-art project, “The Miraculous: Houston” (2017), and an exhibition of artists and writers, “Under Erasure” at Pierogi Gallery in New York, New York (2018-19). He is an Editor-at-Large of The Brooklyn Rail, a contributing editor of Art in America and professor of critical studies at the University of Houston School of Art.
