Roma, an immersive, visually astounding experience shot on 70mm black-and-white film, chronicles a family during a year of crisis in 1970s Mexico City. Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio) works as a live-in housekeeper for an upper-middle-class family. When the father abandons them, Cleo cares for the household while discovering that she herself is pregnant. An homage to the women in Alfonso Cuarón’s life, Roma weaves a tale of the magic and mundaneness that is the essence of existence. First-time actor Aparicio is the first indigenous woman to be nominated for an Oscar.
