Reviving Japan’s Dynamism through Womenomics

Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015

07:00 PM – 08:15 PM
US/Central

Despite its impressive economic rise in the half-century following World War II, Japan lags sorely behind much of the world in its utilization of women as policy makers and drivers of economic growth. As economic stagnation continues to haunt the islands, Japan’s women are uniquely positioned to play a key role in dismantling archaic cultural norms to usher in a new era of economic dynamism.

Special guest Yuriko Koike joins Asia Society to discuss the roots of Japan’s underutilization of women in its political and economic spheres, the consequences of this exclusion, the economic potential to be gained from an equal role for women, and paths forward to implement reforms to shatter what she argues is not a glass ceiling, but an iron plate.

About the Lecture

About Yuriko Koike

Yuriko Koike, a member of Japan’s House of Representatives, served as Minister of the Environment from 2003 to 2006. She was successful in promoting a new business style called “Cool Biz” to tackle global warming. Later Koike held two other cabinet posts: Special Advisor to the Prime Minister for National Security Affairs, appointed in 2006, and Japan’s first female in Defense Ministry, in July 2007. In 2008 she ran for the head of Japan’s ruling party, which brings with it the prime ministership, as the first female candidate. Koike began her career as a TV personality and Arabist. She has written books and articles on Japanese politics, international affairs and career women’s networking.
