Renee Gladman: A Lecture of Lines

Thursday, Mar. 12, 2020 – Thursday, Mar. 12, 2020

07:00 PM – 08:00 PM
US/Central

rg2017

In every kind of mark—intentional or stray—exists an aspect of inscription, and within this inscription unfolds the story of three intertwining acts: thinking, living, and reading. Writer and artist Renee Gladman presents a lecture of wander, taking into account the lines, smudges, faints, and swathes of Cy Twombly’s Treatise on the Veil as well as those occurring in works by Julie Mehretu, Christine Aye Tjoe, and Brice Marden.

This program is a part of the 2020 Bagley Wright Lecture Series on Poetry, which supports contemporary poets as they explore in-depth their own thinking on poetry and poetics, and give a series of public lectures resulting from these investigations at partnering institutions nationwide.

About the artist:
Renee Gladman (b. 1971) is a writer and artist preoccupied with crossings, thresholds, and geographies as they play out at the intersections of poetry, prose, drawing and architecture. She is the author of thirteen published works, including a cycle of novels about the city-state Ravicka and its inhabitants, as well as Calamities, a collection of linked auto-essays on the intersections of writing, drawing, and community, which won the 2017 CLMP Firecracker Award for Creative Non-Fiction. Recent essays and visual work have appeared in The Paris ReviewGulf CoastGrantaHarper’sBOMB Magazine, and n+1.
