Serge Attukwei Clottey (b.  1985, Accra, Ghana) deals with questions of displacement and migration in his site-specific installation, Softening the Borders. The artist creates an environment that emphasizes the disorienting, foreign feeling of being a stranger in a new land and addresses how people navigate systems of power through the experience of migration.

By overcoming the various obstacles in the installation, Attukwei invites visitors to forge their own path, re-imagining how one creates a sense of home away from home and a renewed, resilient sense of self in the face of the adversity that often accompanies migratory journeys.

Radical Revisionists: Contemporary African Artists Confronting Past and Present is made possible through the generosity of the Moody Center for the Arts Founder’s Circle and the Moody Foundation.
