In conjunction with the exhibition Mark Rothko: A Retrospective, this gallery program introduces poet Martin Rock, who will read selections from his anthology Dear Mark, a series of poems in dialogue with Rothko’s paintings. A book signing follows the reading.

Dear Mark was published by Brooklyn Arts Press in 2013, drawing praise from nationally acclaimed author and poet Edward Hirsch: “Mark Rothko's paintings have the aura of the sacred, the immanence of a revelation, the promise of a secret that is always just about to be disclosed. Martin Rock responds to Rothko's hushed eloquence with his own quick-hitting intimations of mortality, spiritual poems that deftly enter Rothko's visionary space, his intimate, anguished, violent, and fateful dramas.”

About the Lecture

Martin Rock is the author of Residuum, winner of the 2015 CSU Poetry Center First Book Prize. Rock is a doctoral candidate in the creative writing program at the University of Houston, where he is managing editor of Gulf Coast. His poetry has appeared in publications such as AGNI, Black Warrior Review, and the Tampa Review, and was included in Best New Poets 2012.
