Speaker: Ken Gross, guest curator of Sculpted in Steel: Art Deco Automobiles and Motorcycles, 1929–1940, and former director, Petersen Automotive Museum

During the Art Deco era of the 1920s and 1930s, the automobile—a child of the 20th century—was rapidly changing and evolving mechanically. Streamlining, a popular style associated with automotive design during the period, was equated with modernity as well as with efficient aerodynamics.

In this lecture, noted automobile expert Ken Gross goes “behind the headlights” to explain more about why the exhibition’s 17 cars and motorcycles, by some of the most notable names in automotive history, are so significant. He also discusses how the vehicles were found, preserved, and restored.
