As Miriam’s 15th birthday approaches, her family and friends expect to meet her new boyfriend. But Miriam hasn’t met him face-to-face herself—only online. The pressure mounts as Miriam needs a partner to practice the dance for her quinceañera. When biracial Miriam (Dulce Rodríguez) discovers that her boyfriend is black, she struggles with telling her race-obsessed mother. This fresh debut feature explores the racial and social biases of Dominican society as audiences accompany Miriam through dress fittings, dance lessons, and hair straightening, realizing that the party is for anyone but her.
“The screenplay unpacks tricky personal politics with an assuredly light touch, never forcing the flawed, finely drawn characters into overt rhetoric.” —Variety
“An excellent central performance from newcomer Dulce Rodríguez makes this quietly powerful film about racism (both societal and internalized), teenage anxieties, and class a must-see.” —One Room with a View
“A film that should not go unnoticed.” —Cinemanía (Spain)
