Join Mr. O as we bake up some science by examining the chemistry of cookie making. We’re going to get our bake on and make chocolate chip cookies - together! As we bake, we’ll study the science behind the process. Plus, we’ll explore how changes in the recipe he uses compared to one of the most famous changes the cookies.

Check the pantry and fridge for these items to bake with us or add it to your parent's grocery list in case they are planning a trip this week. Have they already gone to the grocery store to pick up essentials? No worries! Follow along live anyway and try it next time.

What you'll need:
Equipment

Stand mixer with paddle attachment (or a hand mixer with a large metal bowl)
Paper plate (or second mixing bowl)
Baking sheets
Oven
Parchment paper (or silicone mats)*
Cooling racks*
Sifter*
#20 disher*
Scale*
*Optional but recommended.

Ingredients

1 stick (8 Tbs or 4 oz) unsalted butter
½ cup (8 Tbs) butter-flavored shortening*
2¼ cups (12 oz) cake or all-purpose flour
1 tsp kosher salt
1½ tsp baking powder or 1 tsp. baking soda*
¼ cup (2 oz) granulated sugar
1¼ cup (8 oz) brown sugar (light is preferred)
2 eggs – 1 whole and 1 just the yolk
2 tbs whole milk*
1½ tsp vanilla extract
2 cups (one 12 oz bag) semi-sweet chocolate chips
