Garden Paradise: The Magnificent Safavid Carpet from the Burrell Collection, Glasgow highlights the significance of gardens in Islamic lands through the lens of the world-renowned—but rarely displayed—Wagner Garden Carpet, along with masterworks from the Hossein Afshar Collection.

The Wagner Garden Carpet, woven in Safavid Iran in the 17th century, is considered one of the three earliest surviving Persian garden carpets in the world. It is unique from all other examples in its unusually dense and naturalistic depictions of flora and fauna, symbolizing an earthly paradise. Selections of objects from the Hossein Afshar Collection amplify the display and demonstrate the profound ideal of garden imagery in all artistic media, from ceramics and metalwork to the arts of the book in Islamic lands.

MFAH members are invited to reserve a spot for this one-hour tour to explore the exhibition together with a Museum docent.

Space is limited, and spots fill up fast. Secure your reservation in advance at [email protected] or 713.353.1550. Not a member? Join today!
