MASTER WORKSHOP: LAP-LOOM WEAVING WITH ISABEL WILSON

Saturday, Jul. 21, 2018 – Saturday, Jul. 21, 2018

12:00 PM – 04:00 PM
US/Central

Laploomworkshop

Discover the basics of lap-loom weaving in this introductory workshop with Houston designer Isabel Wilson. Learn how to set up your loom using stretcher bars and nails, as well as essential techniques such as plain weave, twill, basket weave, herringbone, and tapestry. Create various textures and patterns using a variety of yarns provided during the class. Experiment with shapes and colors freely as you try out new ways of basic weaving. This class is designed to focus on a learned skill rather than a final product. You will leave knowing how to warp your loom, create basic stitches, and use finishing techniques. Take your loom home to continue your journey into weaving!

The workshop is designed for beginners, so no prior weaving knowledge experience is required.  All necessary materials, equipment, and instruction will be provided.

Pre-registration is required. Registration fee is $100 for HCCC members and $125 for non-members.  Fee includes instructor, materials, and administration fees. Participants will leave with a finished weaving, looms, and weaving tools. The class is for ages 15 and over and requires a minimum of 12 participants to hold.  Register here.

About Isabel Wilson

Ready-to-wear designer Isabel Wilson is from Texas and grew up spending her summers in the bright colors of Cuernavaca, Mexico. Isabel received her BA in textile design at the Rhode Island School of Design and later studied apparel design at the Aalto University of Art & Design in Helsinki, Finland. After graduating in 2008, Isabel moved to NYC, where she worked in the trade and designed textiles for many notable designers, including Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Phillip Lim, Nicole Miller, Tucker, and Bodkin & Degen. Since then, Isabel has collaborated with other artists and design companies including Vonnegut Kraft, Chen & Kai, Biscuit Home, Like Minded Objects, painter Richmond Burton, Wallpaper Projects, Rform Studio, Mariem Co., and Crush Studio. Isabel has also created custom performance outfits for musicians including Kesha, Lady Gaga, Kelsey Lu, and Faren & the French Fries.

In 2013, Isabel introduced her debut SS14 womenswear collection in NYC. Since then, Isabel has explored the relationship between materials and the diverse array of women who wear her clothes. Isabel designs with the intention to empower women by making them feel amazing, challenge traditional notions of what it means to be sexy, and celebrate diversity. Now in her eighth season, Isabel continues to shape flattering silhouettes, cut from her custom textiles.
