For over 100 years African Americans have made contributions to the defense of the United States of America, for centuries African’s have made a lasting impression on the World of Art. There is no doubt that times of war had and still has a major influence on Art. What may not be known to the masses is that some of our men and women in the armed forces are also artist.

In an effort to pay homage to that bravery, heroism and artistry, MIA will create an atmosphere where veterans, active duty men and women can showcase their talents off the battlefield along with other modern and contemporary artist who may have been influenced by the military.

Saturday – July 28, 2018:

(In Commemoration of Buffalo Soldiers Day) 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Exhibition – Free & Open to the Public

Lecture: 10 Notable African-American Artists that have Served in the Military: WWI – Post Vietnam Era presented by African-American realist and impressionist painter, Ted Ellis. This lecture will feature works by legacy artists such as Romare Bearden & Jacob Lawrence, and will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 11:35 a.m. with a 10 minute Q & A at the end.

Lecture: Living an Artful Life presented by Army veteran, art therapist, and visual artist, Chris Van Loan Sr. This lecture is on living an art filled life despite life many distractions, as well as how to live with a life revolved around the arts both during and post – service. Lecture to be held from 12:00 p.m. – 12:35 p.m. with a 10 minute Q & A at the end.

Panel: What it means to be an African-American US Veteran, and How that Service Translates into Art Work, moderated by United States Navy Veteran and Photographer, Diamond Wilcoxson-Gass. Panel to include artists Frank Frazier, Burl Washington, Bob Snead, and Steven Tette. Panel to be held 1 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. with 10 minute Q & A to end.

Live Painting: JOIN IN on this live painting session! Attendees are encouraged to join in on this interactive live painting on an over-sized canvas, directed by artists and veteran, Steven Tette.
