Held on the eve of the Long Nights Moon—the name for the final full moon before the winter solstice—Luminous: The Menil Collection’s 30th Anniversary Ball, will be the spectacular culmination of a year of celebration. On December 2, 2017, Menil friends and supporters will gather to honor the enduring legacy of the Menil and its founders while celebrating its radiant future.

Designed by Todd Events and staged in a tent set on the Menil Collection’s expansive lawn, Luminous continues a tradition of artist-inspired fêtes. Illuminated by Max Ernst’s enigmatic painting Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year—a gift from the artist to the de Menils in 1955—the Menil Collection’s 30th Anniversary Ball will bring to life the enchanted, luminous world of Ernst’s Surrealist landscape. An evening not to be missed, the ball will be only the fourth in the history of the museum and will be the much-anticipated finale of a series of festivities throughout the 30th anniversary year, which will also include a Menil Contemporaries (the museum’s young patrons group) party, member and community celebrations, and public programs.

Luminous will honor Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Life Trustee of the Menil Collection, Louisa Stude Sarofim. Ball chairs include Allison Sarofim and Stuart Parr, Leigh and Reggie Smith, Phoebe and Bobby Tudor, Adelaide de Menil Carpenter, as well as Honorary Chairs architect Renzo Piano and French ambassador to the United States Gérard Araud.
