Houston Center for Photography is pleased to present a lecture and book signing with Marfa-based photographer, Matthew Genitempo, discussing his recent body of work, Jasper. A recent finalist for The Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Award’s First PhotoBook Prize, Jasper presents the otherworldly environment of a semi-fictional place located deep in the woods of the Ozarks. The imagery fluctuates between detailed depictions of the men inhabiting Jasper in total solitude and the hazy, romanticized landscape in which they live. Teetering the line between fact and fiction, Genitempo’s Jasper further investigates his own intrigue and fascination about escaping the everyday, revealing the reality and myths of what it means to be truly independent from society.

This discussion is part of Houston Center for Photography’s ongoing series, Words & Pictures, a lecture and conversation series between photographers, writers, and thinkers of the medium.

Matthew Genitempo is an American photographer and book publisher currently living and making work in Marfa, Texas. He received his MFA in photography from the University of Hartford. Matthew was recently selected as one of PDN’s 30 Emerging Photographers and received the LensCulture Emerging Photographer Award.  Jasper was published by Twin Palms in September 2018.
