Presented by writer-director Lorenzo Vigas

Armando, middle-aged and solitary, lures young men from the streets to his Caracas apartment with the promise of money. In fact he’s a voyeur, although the distance he maintains contains its own particular aggression. Life takes an unexpected turn when he meets 17-year-old Elder. This relationship begins with violence, but transforms as a surprising intimacy emerges, for which neither is prepared.

From Afar, the remarkable feature debut by Lorenzo Vigas, won the Golden Lion at the 2015 Venice Film Festival. It speaks to Venezuela’s present reality and the disparate social classes that comprise the country’s capital. From the gated communities of the very rich to the poor communities crammed into monotonous apartment blocks, Vigas paints a portrait of a multitiered society, providing context to his resonant story about an impossible friendship.

About the Film

About the Presenter
Lorenzo Vigas was born in Mérida, Venezuela, and studied biology before focusing on filmmaking at New York University. After moving to Caracas, he spent several years directing documentaries and commercials. In 2004, while living in Mexico, he directed Los elefantes nunca olvidan, the multiple-award-winning short film that premiered at the Cannes’ International Critics Week and started a trilogy about absent fathers in Latin America. The second installment of the trilogy is his debut feature Desde allá, which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, where it became the first film from Latin America to win the Venice Golden Lion. He plans to film the final title in the trilogy, La caja, later this year, and is also completing a documentary about his father, Oswaldo Vigas, an artist who is represented in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
