Presented by Donna Pierce, former chair of the New World department, and former Jan and Frederick Mayer Curator of Spanish Colonial Art, Denver Art Museum

The Spanish colonization of Latin America began with the 1535 creation of the viceroyalty of New Spain, which comprised present-day Mexico, Central America, and parts of the southern United States. The viceroyalty of Peru—made up of present-day South America, except for Brazil and the far south—followed in 1542. Peru would later be subdivided by formation of the viceroyalties of New Granada and the Rio de la Plata.

This lecture celebrating Spanish Colonial Paintings from the Thoma Collection explores the broader colonial world and the importance of clothing and jewelry in colonial society. Donna Pierce, a renowned expert on Spanish colonial art, addresses the ways in which—even as far away as New Spain’s northern frontier of New Mexico—the colonial elite wore their wealth to flaunt their status.
