Storytelling Traditions

If you love myths and legends, let your imagination run wild while inventing your own! Create your own script based on India’s classic tale The Mahabharata, and then weave together ancient Indian dances, Chinese music, and Japanese drumming to bring it to life by performing for your family and friends on stage at the end of the week.

Recommended for students ages 8-12.

About the Instructors

Silambam Houston is a 501(c)(3) registered non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and demystifying Indian Classical Dance. Founded by Dr. Lavanya Rajagopalan in 2002, it began as a non-profit Indian dance academy, specializing in the dance form Bharatanatyam. The company’s dedication to providing comprehensive arts education and exceptional arts programming for its students has only grown over the years, as has its vision for the future. Today, Silambam Houston not only aims to foster local talent and connect younger generations to the long history of the Indian classical arts, but also to connect across cultural boundaries through the shared celebratory experience of dance, music, and performance.

Kaminari Taiko enriches the lives of our members and audiences by learning, performing, and preserving the Japanese art of taiko. Since the group's founding in 1996, Kaminari Taiko has expanded its cultural influence across Texas and the Gulf South. We reach thousands of people each year through concerts, festivals, and classes. By fusing traditional instruments with modern rhythms, Kaminari strives to respectfully advance taiko as an art form, and to inspire audiences in Texas and beyond.

The North America Youth Chinese Orchestra is a 501c3 non- profit organization founded in 2012 by Changlu Wu.It provides a platform for the young musicians to showcase their talents. The young musicians were born and raised in America. Besides being passionate about their music, they are thrilled to serve the community, bringing music and cheers to hospitals, senior centers, churches, schools and public libraries. They also value the opportunities to socialize and enjoy the comradeship with other young music lovers.
