Trading hub, engineering marvel, monument to ingenuity, and North America's largest archaic complex, Poverty Point is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Join HMNS curator of archaeology Dr. Dirk Van Tuerenhout on a trip to this unique site that dates back to 1700 BC. After an introduction in the museum, the group will see demonstrations in flint knapping, earth oven cooking and spear-throwing with an atlatl. After a guided tram tour of the main areas of the complex, the group will enjoy a picnic lunch. Then they will embark on a 2.6 mile walking tour with site archaeologist Dr. Diana Greenlee to see sites not generally accessible to the public.
Participants will meet at 10 am at Poverty Point UNESCO World Heritage Site, one hour northeast of Monroe, Louisiana off I-20. Map, directions and lodging suggestions will be emailed to those registered for the trip.
Limited to 35 participants.
