Eric Klinenberg is the author of Palaces for the People: How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life. In his book, he argues that the future of democratic societies rests not simply on shared values but on shared spaces: the libraries, childcare centers, bookstores, churches, synagogues, and parks where crucial, sometimes life-saving connections, are formed.

Tonight, Klinenberg discusses why and how social infrastructure investment is becoming a key part of placemaking and urban policy, and how it can help fight inequality, polarization, and the decline of civic life.

About the Speaker

Eric Klinenberg is the Helen Gould Shepard Professor of Social Science and director of the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University. His other books include Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone and Fighting for Air: The Battle to Control America’s Media.
