Presented by David B. Warren, founding director emeritus, Bayou Bend

The daughter of a Texas governor, Ima Hogg overcame her unusual name and the loss of her parents at a relatively young age to emerge as an independent woman of means—means that she used to extraordinary ends in the betterment of her native state. Ima Hogg devoted her talents and considerable family fortune toward nurturing the arts in Texas and preserving its cultural heritage.

In 1913, she founded the Houston Symphony. Years later, she donated her stately home, filled with American furniture and decorative arts, to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Bayou Bend opened as a house museum in 1966. After the death of her brother Will in 1930, she and her brother Mike established the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health at the University of Texas. These efforts and many others were part of her mission to leave Texas a better place. A new biography of Ima Hogg celebrates her lasting legacy using details drawn from her diaries, letters, and papers, as well as firsthand accounts by the author, who had the privilege of knowing her well.

Author David B. Warren speaks at Bayou Bend’s Kilroy Visitor Center at 3 pm. A celebration and book signing follow at 4 pm on the terrace of the Bayou Bend mansion.
