Inspired by our Tsuruya Kōkei: Modern Kabuki Prints Revised & Revisited exhibition, join us for a three-class series to learn the art and skill of creating block prints. Participants will create a 2-color reduction print using linoleum printing blocks that they will cut themselves, then create prints by hand using traditional Japanese methods.  Learning this method will allow students to continue to create prints at home.

During the first class, participants will receive a guided tour of the exhibition to immerse themselves in Japanese culture and the art of creating woodblock prints. Students will draw inspiration from the 77 prints created by Tsuruya Kōkei, widely celebrated as one of Japan's leading contemporary print artists, as well as two dozen works by contemporary Japanese and western artists. After the tour, participants will begin tracing their own designs and learn basic carving techniques. The second and third classes will be spent carving and creating prints under the guidance of the instructor. Printmaking tools will be provided, but students are asked to bring a wooden serving spoon to use as a printing baren.

No experience is necessary. Registration fee covers the instructor fee, materials, and administrative fees. Students are asked to bring sketches, photos, or other images to use as reference material that can be drawn or traced onto the linoleum block.

Class minimum: 8 participants
Minimum age: 18 years

About the Instructor

Amber Kaiser

Amber Kaiser lives and works in Houston, Texas. Having a sculpture background, Kaiser feels printmaking was a natural direction to go in with the three-dimensional quality of printmaking techniques. As a member of Burning Bones Press, she has learned and created with many talented artists throughout the past 6 years. Kaiser’s art focuses on the human figure and their environment, whether physically or culturally. She is an avid traveler and has conducted print demonstrations internationally as well as participated in international residency programs. Lino cut has been her primary medium, but also enjoys etching, and clay work. As a recent addition to Speedball's Artist Demo program, in addition to her usual workshops, she is also being sent to various locations in Texas to demonstrate printmaking tools and processes. Kaiser is usually found either conducting a local workshop, at BBP or her home studio.
